Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz & Selim Birsel

SAHA provided support for the production of new works by Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz and Selim Birsel for their exhibition held between 24 February–12 March 2017 at Candyland.

Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz and Selim Birsel’s parallel interventions on the walls of the gallery constitute a complementary confrontation between Türkyılmaz’s living interactive MindMaps and Birsel’s ironic and ambiguous compositions with stamps. The fact that both artists make use of a modest technique does not prevent them from taking on difficult issues and challenging our expectation regarding what an artwork should look like and how it should be approached.

Candyland is a non-profit art space in Stockholm. Since 2004, Candyland has arranged 150 exhibitions in the gallery space accompanied by gigs, performances, workshops, and screenings. This has resulted in a wide variety of projects, often experimental and informal in their presentation, and a welcoming atmosphere, reaching new audiences.

About Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz

Mürüvvet Türkyılmaz (1968, İzmir) lives and works in Istanbul. Her main areas of concern are geography and cartography as a means of dealing with issues of borders, isolation, and the compressed and fast social life, which exist in a specific time and space. In her work, Türkyılmaz uses installations, videos and drawings to address the fluidity of cultures and people in contradiction with the rigid and static charting of maps, with their clearly demarcated borders. Her work is the result of tracings dependent on collective and personal memories.
