The 3rd Mardin Biennial

Mythologies

The 3rd edition of Mardin Biennial entitled “Mythologies” takes place in Mardin, Turkey, from 15 May to 15 June 2015. SAHA provided support for the production of works of the artists participating at the 3rd Mardin Biennial.

The conceptual framework of the Biennial was set up with reference to Ali Artun’s text. The most essential aspect of the biennale is that there is no appointed curator. Instead, the biennale is realized with the contribution of locals as well as volunteers from elsewhere.

The 3rd Mardin Biennial embraces a collective approach, constituted mostly of locals. Likewise, the majority of the artists taking part are also from the surrounding region, among them are also artisans and craftsman. The Mardin Biennial proposes an alternative approach to the prevailing biennial processes by questioning the authority of a visiting curator who is often alien to the geography, history and context of the setting, and single-handedly decides whom, what and how to exhibit.
