Born in Shanghai, Xiaoyu Weng has established a distinguished career as a curator and writer within the international art world. Her foundational experiences include serving as the founding director of Asia Programs for the Kadist Art Foundation in Paris and San Francisco in 2010. She later joined the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where she held the position of Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Associate Curator of Chinese Art from 2015 to 2021. During this period, Weng also contributed to major international initiatives, including curating the inaugural Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art in Yekaterinburg.Throughout her career, Weng has demonstrated a commitment to developing syncretic and hybrid frameworks that foreground contemporary practices, often spanning diverse disciplines and cultural contexts. Prior to her current roles, she led the modern and contemporary art department at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. Her curatorial approach is characterized by close collaborations with artists and a focus on themes such as the impact of globalization, the intersection of art, science, and technology, as well as emerging ecological and environmental transformations, often viewed through the lenses of feminism, identity, and decolonization. Notably, at the Guggenheim Museum, she developed an online series examining anti-Asian racism from contemporary artists' perspectives.More recently, Weng has taken on significant leadership positions. She is the Artistic Director of the not-for-profit Tanoto Art Foundation, based in Singapore, where she is instrumental in shaping its artistic vision and programming. Concurrently, she has been appointed Executive Director of Art in General, a New York-based nonprofit exhibition space which reopened under her guidance in 2025, reaffirming its mission to support emerging and experimental artists. These roles underscore her influence in fostering new talent and critical discourse across diverse geographical and institutional landscapes.
