Maria Elena Motisi's professional journey in the art world is rooted in a robust academic background, including specialized training undertaken between Pisa and Bristol, culminating in a master’s degree focused on complex program development. Her career began with her engagement with MiBAC/PARC in 2006, leading to her joining the MAXXI museum in 2010.

At MAXXI, Motisi's role evolved, and by 2014, she was established as an active curator. During her time there, she honed her expertise in the intricate planning and execution of site-specific artistic interventions, innovative video installations, and large-scale international exhibitions, contributing to the museum's contemporary art programming.
