Berkay Tuncay

Jan van Eyck's Academie | Netherlands

SAHA provides production support for Berkay Tuncay's permanent public project at Open Studio, which is planned to be held at the end of the artist residency program at Jan van Eyck Academie.

Berkay Tuncay’s practice is based on investigating multi-layered effects of the Internet on global society by copying, combining, and transforming the cultural codes that are being distributed online. By taking part in many international group exhibitions, Tuncay presented his works on the online culture in diverse forms.

Jan van Eyck Academie's Open Studio event, attended by 40 artists, curators, designers, writers and art collectives, including Berkay Tuncay, can be visited between Friday, June 24 - Sunday, June 26, 2022.

Berkay Tuncay (1983, Istanbul) after graduating from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, his master thesis on “The Form and the Thematics of Internet Art” was followed by further research on the relationship between the internet, technological progress and society. Through this investigation, the artist finds the internet worthy of study as it has evolved into an indispensable gathering point for the public in which the individuals reveal their repressed irrational behaviours.

Currently, while he examines the so-called ‘Post Internet’, the radical shift in human perception by the wide recognition of technological progress, he is interested in the new visual aesthetics revealed by social media platforms, live chat rooms and so on. He conveys his observations about the online culture as installations while using materials from screenshots to videos, flags to t-shirts, photography to texts, printed materials to 3D objects.
