Banu Cennetoğlu, Chisenhale Gallery

SAHA provided production support for Banu Cennetoğlu’s solo exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery.

SAHA provided support for the production of new works by Banu Cennetoğlu for the exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery held between 28 June–26 August 2018.

Banu Cennetoğlu’s work incorporates methods of mapping, collecting and archiving in order to question and challenge the distribution and consumption of information. For her commission at Chisenhale Gallery, Cennetoğlu is producing a major new moving image installation presented in Chisenhale’s exhibition hall.

The new multi-titled moving image work maps Cennetoğlu’s archive of digital images and videos sourced from various devices, including her mobile phones, computers, cameras and external hard drives. Starting on 10 June 2006 and ending on 21 March 2018, the work presents a continuous stream of unedited content, ordered in a chronological format. The work is 128 hours and 22 minutes in duration, and each day the gallery is open a new 6 hour-long file is presented. The work traces over a decade of personal, social and political change from the banality of life’s small moments, to the birth of Cennetoğlu’s daughter, to documentation of her artistic practice, to numerous protests, ceremonies and cemeteries.

Cennetoğlu also facilitated the distribution of The List in The Guardian newspaper, in print and online on 20 June 2018, World Refugee Day. Compiled and updated each year by UNITED for Intercultural Action, The List traces information relating to the deaths of 34,361 refugees and migrants who have lost their lives within, or on the borders of Europe since 1993. Since 2007, in collaboration with art workers and institutions, Cennetoğlu has facilitated updated versions of The List using public spaces such as billboards, transport networks and newspapers. Co-produced by Chisenhale Gallery, London and Liverpool Biennial, the new edition of The List will be available at Chisenhale Gallery (28 June–26 August 2018) and Liverpool Biennial (14 July–28 October 2018).

About Banu Cennetoğlu

Banu Cennetoğlu (1970, Ankara) studied in Istanbul, Paris and New York before she was awarded a place at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2002. Her work has been presented at the 3rd and 5th Berlin Biennales (2004 and 2008), 10th Istanbul Biennial and 1st Athens Biennale (both 2007), Manifesto 8 in Murcia (2010), 10th Gwangju Biennale (2014), Documenta (14) (2017), and was one of two artists who represented Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009). She is one of six artists invited for the 2016 DAAD Künstlerprogramm in Berlin. She lives and works in Istanbul where, for the past nine years, she has also run BAS, a non-profit project space in the city centre dedicated to collecting, archiving, exhibiting and publishing limited edition artists’ books.
