SAHA provided support for the production of the new work by Erkan Özgen participating in Manifesta –The European Biennial of Contemporary Art held between 16 June–4 November 2018.
Created in collaboration with refugee women in Europe and Turkey who fled the war zones of northern Iraq, Erkan Özgen’s project explores the impact of the conflict on their lives. The video investigates how these refugee women manage to live with their trauma and memories of violence. “Purple Muslin” features a series of interviews in which the women recount their personal experiences of war, suffering and migration.
Erkan Özgen
Erkan Özgen (1971, Mardin) graduated from Çukurova University Painting Department. He works on video based installations and has participated in group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He was awarded the “Polarized! Vision is War/Peace” prize for his film “Wonderland”. He has also participated in many workshops in Beirut, Damascus, Diyarbakır, Enschede, Khartoum and Taipei. Özgen has given lectures on contemporary art in Turkey and abroad and has also worked as an activist in support of various ecological initiatives. He is one of the founders of Loading Independent Art Space established in Diyarbakır in 2017. Özgen lives and works in Diyarbakır.
Along with the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel, Manifesta is one of the foremost art events in Europe. It differs in its pan-regional approach, travelling to a different location for each edition, and is known as the European Biennial of Contemporary Art. After the first edition was held in Rotterdam in 1996, in the following years Manifesta was held in Luxembourg (1998), Ljubljana (2000), Frankfurt (2002), San Sebastian (2004), Nicosia (planned for 2006 but later cancelled), Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol (2008), Murcia (2010), Genk (2012), St. Petersburg (2014), and Zurich (2016). Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centers of artistic production, and its nomadic character sets it apart from other organizations.
SAHA supported the production of the work by Seçil Yaylalı who has been invited to participate in the new project of rum46.
SAHA provided support for the production of works of Özge Açıkkol, Xurban Collective, and Nalan Yırtmaç participating at the 8th Bucharest Biennale.
SAHA supported the production of new performance and video works by BAÇOY KOOP, invited for a series of special performances and talks curated by Nicholas John Jones and Alessandra Prandin.
