Erkan Özgen, "Purple Muslin"

SAHA supported the production of the work by Erkan Özgen who is invited to Manifesta 12.

SAHA provided support for the production of the new work by Erkan Özgen participating in Manifesta –The European Biennial of Contemporary Art held between 16 June–4 November 2018.

Created in collaboration with refugee women in Europe and Turkey who fled the war zones of northern Iraq, Erkan Özgen’s project explores the impact of the conflict on their lives. The video investigates how these refugee women manage to live with their trauma and memories of violence. “Purple Muslin” features a series of interviews in which the women recount their personal experiences of war, suffering and migration.

About Erkan Özgen

Erkan Özgen (1971, Mardin) graduated from Çukurova University Painting Department. He works on video based installations and has participated in group exhibitions in Turkey and abroad. He was awarded the “Polarized! Vision is War/Peace” prize for his film “Wonderland”. He has also participated in many workshops in Beirut, Damascus, Diyarbakır, Enschede, Khartoum and Taipei. Özgen has given lectures on contemporary art in Turkey and abroad and has also worked as an activist in support of various ecological initiatives. He is one of the founders of Loading Independent Art Space established in Diyarbakır in 2017. Özgen lives and works in Diyarbakır.

About Manifesta
