Yuko Hasegawa is a Tokyo-based curator and art historian. She is Visiting Professor of Curatorial Theory and Practice at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Management, Program Director of Art & Design at the International House of Japan, Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, and Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts. She formerly served as Director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and as Artistic Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

Hasegawa’s interdisciplinary curatorial practice brings together art, architecture, design, science, and anthropology, with a particular focus on ecology, gender, and critiques of Eurocentric modernism. Her major projects include Japanorama: A New Vision on Art Since 1970 at Centre Pompidou-Metz (2017), Fukami: A Plunge into Japanese Aesthetics in Paris (2018), SYMBIOSIS: The Lived Island (2021–2022), and Art & New Ecology at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts (2022). At the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, she curated exhibitions by Dumb Type, Olafur Eliasson, and Rhizomatiks.

She has curated numerous international biennials, including the 7th Istanbul Biennial (2001), Shanghai Biennale (2002), 29th São Paulo Biennial (2010), Sharjah Biennial 11 (2013), 7th Moscow Biennale (2017), and Thailand Biennale, Korat (2021). She is Artistic Director of the Forest Festival of the Arts Okayama (2024 and 2027) and curator of the Syrian Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale.

Hasegawa has published extensively on contemporary art, ecology, gender, and Japanese visual culture. She serves on the advisory committee of the Istanbul Biennial and several international award juries. Her honours include France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2015), Brazil’s Order of Rio Branco (2017), and the Japan Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award (2020). She holds an MFA in Art History from Tokyo University of the Arts.
